The energy of the stones resonates and balances the chakras, bringing equilibrium on a physical, psychological ans spiritual level. The stones naturally absorb energies and one stroke with a hot basalt stone is said to be equivalent to ten manual strokes, therefore, results can be achieved quicker!
What is hot stone therapy?
Hot stone massage combines the benefits of hydrotherapy and thermalism with the strokes of massage using the stones to create a deep, relaxing and healing treatment. The heat of the stones warms the skin, which allows for the absorption of moisturising and therapeutic oils, while simultaneously preparing the muscles so I can work deeper, relieving tension and tightness, hot stones are used to massage the client and may also be placed in positions on top and beneath the body, to create a therapeutic and holistic effect. Holistic from the Greek work 'holos' meaning whole, entire, complete, in essence, treating the mind and body as one. Only when treating a person holistically can homeostasis (the balance and harmony of mind and body) be achieved.
Origins
Hot stone massage dates back over 3,000 years in ancient India, China and more recently North American Indians living in the Southwest states. The traditions and healing rituals in which the stones were used included carrying or wearing stones for health and protection. Russians used black stones in their baths, selected for their warming release of energy.
Why Basalt stones?
Basalt is the most common type of igneous rock used in hot stone massage and is extrusive, which means that it forms when molten lava cools following a volcanic eruption. Iron, magnesium and several other elements mix with oxygen during the formation process making the stones dense and dark in colour. It is due to these elements that give basalt the ability to acquire, retain and emanate heat for long periods of time.
Effects and benefits of hot stone massage
-
Hot stones allows for a deeper application of pressure
-
Skin: Hot stone massage causes the skin to sweat (detoxifying), increases the sebum production which naturally moisturises the skin as well as having firming, toning and desquamating effects on the body.
-
Circulatory system: the heat from the stones encourage blood flow creating vasodilation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the cells and collecting waste products such as carbon dioxide-this is a fundamental function of the body's renewal process. The production of erythrocytes (red blood cells) and leucocytes (white blood cells) are increased, supporting the immune system.
-
Lymphatic system: known as the body's secondary circulation. If waste output is increased via the removal of carbon dioxide, waste and urea...the body will naturally be detoxifying itself!
-
Muscular system: overworked, tired and aching muscles are renewed as hot stone massage increases the removal of lactic acid.
-
Nervous system: as the heat from the stones penetrate the body, nerve endings are soothed bringing a deep state of relaxation, calm, peace and a sense of well-being.
